Mahahual, Mexico. The Other Maya, The Malecon at Mahahual.

Costa Maya, Mahahual, Mexico
The Malecon may be thee highlight of Mahahual. Mahahual is a cruise ship dependent small town, located far from the urban settings of Cancun, Playa Del Carmen or even Akumal. It's actually closer to Belize. If you should decide to go, Mahahual comes alive when the cruise ships dock. Closed shops open, restaurants spring to life, music is everywhere and everything teems with life as if the waves have come ashore. That magical part of Mahahual, if you consider it magic, lasts for as long as the ships are docked (about 8hrs) and the Malecon is best enjoyed then, if that is your thing. Without the presence of the cruise lines, it's a ghost town, literally and that too can be an attraction if you will. When the cruise ships are not in town, the beach is empty, 75% of the restaurants are closed and very few people, locals or tourists are found strolling beach side. If you're the introverted type searching for solitude, drop your bags, you've found your spot as all of Mahahual and the Malecon is yours. Extroverts need not apply. For most, it's exactly what they came to Mahahual for - shopping, dining and collecting some sun on the beach. When Mahaual is on, it's on, it's on. When it's not, you might want to go out and find the inner you, you're out there somewhere.
